Many artists in the culture of Hip Hop/R&B are not aware of their ancestral background, laboriously trying to portray a false image. Then there are others that emerge as secure and in full command of their craft, identity and music. Dontez(Jace) perfectly fits into the latter category. He's not a rapper or singer; he's an artist. Such an artistic and soulful sound that heralds the arrival of a musically inclined new talent. His subject matter and creativity will reach the hearts of the masses, without losing any sincerity or integrity.
Born and raised in the small town of East St. Louis, IL, Dontez grew a love for music at a young age. He explains, “ I got hit by a car when I was three. It surprised the doctors that I walked away only with a dislocated shoulder. My mom knew that I was here for a great purpose after this, and decided to give me to my father’s mother for a better upbringing. My granny instantly put me in the church choir. ” Dontez will grow to become a well known vocalist and promising leader to those who stumbled across his path. He also presented a thirst for knowledge, receiving top honors and awards as a student at Park Annex elementary school. “ I was a smart kid. Straight A’s all the time. I remember crying once because I got a C on a test in the 4th grade. Even then I was serious about being the best.” Dontez's love for different musical genres comes from a variety of sources. He got his soul from gospel music as well as down home blues his grandparents would play at family get- togethers. “ A lot of people don’t know that I’m a fan of rock music, too. I listened to it a lot with my father growing up.”
In his teenage years, Dontez began to dream of a career in music. His love for Hip Hop began to grow as well. He explains, “ I always loved to sing, but when I was eleven, my big brother gave me Nas’ ‘ILLmatic’ album, and I went crazy! I began writing rhymes of my own.” Although no serious recording was done during that period, Dontez did a lot of writing and performing at school talent shows as well as continuing to sing in the church choir.
Ironically it wasn’t until 2008 when Dontez joined the US Navy that he started recording his vocals for the first time. “ That’s when I realized music was my calling. I really matured in the military, found myself, and learned the value of hard work. My whole life I tried to be what others wanted me to be, until I got out on my own and realized what I was suppose to do, which is music. I tried being a drug dealer, chemical engineer, even a preacher. But in the end, I’m a musical being.” After enlisting for 4 years he was honorably discharged. “ I didn’t want to grow old with regrets. So after travelling the world I left the military to pursue what means the world to me.”
Currently, Dontez lives in Orlando, FL where he attended Full Sail University and achieved a bachelor’s degree in Recording Arts of Science and a Maters in Entertainment Business. He's working on multiple projects at the moment with Producer and mentor E-Brad.“ It’s been a long time coming. Many people have been waiting for me to drop something. Well here it comes! I have a message placed in my essence that I want to share with the world.”
